About DCHS

The Darlington County Humane Society is best known for rescuing and facilitating adoption for pets in our community. They also provide medical attention, spay and neuter pets, and actively rescue animals from neglect, cruelty and abandonment.

The cost of care grows every year. The Humane Society relies heavily on donations and volunteers to accomplish these missions.

The county funds approximately half of the funds necessary to operate the shelter on an annual basis. This does not include expenses for the Darlington County Bridge transitional facility, Rescue, or Spay/Neuter Outreach which rely solely on private donations. All four work hand in hand towards our mission of promoting humane care of dogs and cats in Darlington County.

The Darlington County Bridge Transitional Facility is a safe haven for homeless pets who are spoken for by rescue organizations, but need a place to stay prior to transport. The Bridge supports the shelter by moving animals off of their campus to open up space for intake. This facility is solely funded by private donations, which provide boarding until transport, extra medical care, and exercise in a less chaotic environment. The shelter, the Bridge facility, and Rescue have worked together over the last several years to dramatically reduce the euthanasia rate at the shelter and provide the most comfortable temporary home for animals in need until they find their furever homes.
